Abu Haider, MCSD - C#, ASP.NET Developer

I am currently working as the System Architect and Lead Programmer at www.houselocator.com and shopme.com. Although I started my career as a Visual Basic/SQL Server Developer, now my work involves Web Application Development with ASP.NET (currently with ASP.NET 4.0, MVC3 & RAZOR), C#, SQL Server 2008 and associated technologies. I am skilled in Object Oriented Design, ORM and RDBMS. I employ design patterns wherever applicable and try to keep myself up-to-date with the changes in the industry.

I am not always an early adopter. For example, I waited until MVC3 before switching to MVC framework because our own implementation of the Model View Controller pattern was more mature than MVC1 and MVC2. I am also not a blind follower of whatever Microsoft preaches. I have been around long enough to see many (most) of their ideas fail!

I was born and brought up in Bangladesh. After finishing high school I traveled to India to study Electronics. I did Bachelor of electronics near Bangalore, India (Universy of Madras: 1995-1998) and Masters in Electronics near Thanjavur (Bharathidasan University: 1998-2000). I also became a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) in 2000.

Around that time, Microsoft was making a big deal about the release of .Net framework. I was still focused on Visual Basic/SQL Server and developed client/server applications. In 2001 I started Web Design and Development with HTML and classic ASP. On the side, I was working with Adobe Photoshop for graphic design works.

In 2003 I switched to ASP.NET and C#. It has been a joy to follow all the new Technologies over the years that help us to be more efficient at what we do. I am particularly fond of Linq and Linq2SQL.

These days much more than HTML and Programming is needed for Web Development. Over the years I had to become proficient in Standard Compliant HTML coding, CSS, Browser Compatibility, Search Engine Optimization, Writing Copy for the Web, Analytics, Statistics, Web Marketing and what not!

System Administration Skills

Besides designing Websites and Developing Web Applications, my work also involves managing an infrastructure consisting of about 10 Servers located in multiple Datacenters. Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 Servers (both 32 bit and 64 bit platforms) with services like IIS, Mail (SMTP, POP3, IMAP & WebMail), DNS, FTP, SQL Server, Backup, Traffic Analytics, Source Code Repository (Subversion) etc. I designed this geographically disparsed Network of servers, their security, backup strategy, connectivity and everything else. Recently much of my spare time went into studying Microsoft Hyper-V.

I have limited experience with Linux, Ubuntu Server in particular.

Besides all These...

I have been studying Karate, Aikido and Judo for over 17 years. My day's work involve intense brain work, so the intense physical workout in the evening brings a balance between my mind and body. Currently I am a third degree black belt (Sandan) in Shotokan Karate.

Hobbies

My hobbies tend to turn into my profession at some point. I like to figure out how things work. Growing up my hobby was to learn. I learned to bind books, make picture frames, crafts etc., repair shoe and do electrical wiring. Making electronic projects was my biggest hobby in high school, which eventually led me to study Electronics in college. I would like to think Digital Photography is my hobby, but I frequently do it as a part of my job. I do like to visit mountains though. See my photos on flickr.

Weakness

What is the opposite of creative work? Repetitive work. I hate repetitive work! Here is my strategy when it comes to repeating simple tasks over and over:

  1. Automate the process
  2. Find a new (preferably better) way of doing it
  3. Delegate the work to someone else
  4. Suck it up and do it anyway.
Not necessarily in the same order.
